How many times in your life have you brushed your teeth? Probably thousands, and you have probably done it the same way each time. But are you performing this important task correctly?
The office of Ethos Dental Group is enthusiastic about treating your oral health. In addition to our high-quality, comprehensive care, we also boast a welcoming, patient-focused environment in which each client will feel at ease. Whether it’s time for the kids’ back-to-school checkup or you have a toothache, we will provide the expert service you need and expect.
Here are some errors you could be making.
Not brushing long enough. The American Dental Association says you should spend at least two minutes at it. Set a timing device, brush your teeth as usual and see what the timer says. It may be a shorter period than you think.
Brushing less than you should. Once in the morning or only right before bedtime doesn’t make the grade. At least twice a day is a must. Your teeth are constantly bombarded with bacteria and food particles, which create plaque on every surface of every tooth. Plaque is bad for so many reasons.
Your timing is off. Enthusiasm is admirable, but hold off with the toothbrush and toothpaste after a meal for at least a half-hour. That’s when your mouth gets somewhat acidic and leaves your enamel vulnerable to weakening and bacteria. If you can’t wait 30 minutes, use water or mouthwash to neutralize the acid.
Your technique is off. Put your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Then, in a circular motion, clean each surface on each tooth one by one.
Forgoing the floss. Even if you’re an expert brusher, not using dental floss makes you miss the many areas where a brush doesn’t reach. Plaque and bits of food lurk between teeth as well as at and under your gum lines. The sticky film feeds on the food particles and can promote tartar, gum disease and bad breath.
The office of Ethos Dental Group has a well-established reputation for providing excellent care and compassionate service. New patients are always welcome to our state-of-the-art facility, your resource for the best in modern dentistry. Please call us to schedule an appointment.
